With In the Shadow of the Mountain, Cole Chaney steps boldly beyond the bounds of traditional Americana, finding a melodic balance between the grit of ‘90s rock and the bluegrass and folk music of his native Kentucky. “I wanted to make something that sounded like Ralph Stanley went in and got backed up by Soundgarden,” Chaney notes. “I write what I listen to. And whatever I listen to is going to come out in my music.” That ethos drives an album that’s reverent, rebellious, and uniquely his own.
